JUST IN: Enugu Government Shuts Down Gustavo Cubana, Others Over Noise Pollution Violations

In a decisive move aimed at enforcing the state’s environmental protection laws, the Enugu State Government has sealed off popular night club Gustavo Cubana along with several other entertainment venues across the city for breaching the state's Noise Pollution Control Policy.

The enforcement exercise, led by officials from the Enugu State Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), was carried out late Monday night. Authorities say the affected clubs repeatedly ignored warnings and failed to comply with the permissible noise levels despite several notifications.

Speaking to reporters, the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Chinedu Eze, emphasized that the government remains committed to safeguarding public health and urban living standards.

 “This is not an attack on nightlife or businesses. It’s about balancing economic activity with the right of residents to peace and good health. Excessive noise is a public health hazard, and we will not tolerate willful disregard of environmental standards,” Eze stated.

Gustavo Cubana, one of the most frequented nightclubs in the state capital, was cited for multiple violations, including operating beyond stipulated hours and exceeding acceptable decibel levels. Other clubs affected in the sweep include Metro Lounge, Oxygen Club, and Vibe Junction.

Reactions from residents in nearby neighborhoods have been largely supportive, with many applauding the government’s decision.

“I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in months. The music blasts till 4 a.m. almost every weekend. This action is long overdue,” said Ifeoma Nwachukwu, a resident of Independence Layout.

Meanwhile, club owners and entertainment industry stakeholders have called for dialogue, urging the government to consider a more collaborative approach to regulation.

“We understand the need for rules, but shutting us down without room for adjustment affects jobs and livelihoods,” said a representative of the Enugu Nightlife Association, who asked not to be named.

The Enugu State Government has reiterated that the enforcement will continue across the city until all non-compliant establishments meet environmental standards. Business owners have been advised to reach out to the Ministry for guidance on proper soundproofing and operational regulations.

As nightlife continues to thrive in Enugu, the government insists that entertainment must not come at the cost of public peace.
