A three-storey private student hostel, known as Pentagon Lodge, located at Izzangbo Ohankwu Village near Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI) in Ebonyi State, has collapsed after heavy rainfall.

Ebonyi Government Takes Swift Action
Following the collapse, the Ebonyi State Government sealed off the affected lodge and nearby buildings. Students were immediately evacuated to prevent further danger. Structural safety tests have been ordered.
The State Commissioner for Capital City Development, Chief Sunday Ekechi Inyima, visited the site and directed a full investigation into the cause of the collapse. He also confirmed that the property has been officially sealed.
Temporary Shelter for Displaced Students
The Ministries of Capital City Development and Human Capital Development, along with SEMA, Ikwo Local Government, and the AE-FUNAI management, are working together to provide temporary accommodation for the displaced students.
AE-FUNAI Vice-Chancellor Calls for Building Regulation Enforcement
Professor Sunday Elom, Vice-Chancellor of AE-FUNAI, expressed serious concern about the rising number of substandard hostels around the university. He called for stricter enforcement of building regulations to prevent future tragedies.
“This is a wake-up call. We must ensure only safe and well-supervised buildings house our students,” said Elom.
He thanked God that no lives were lost and commended the quick response by the state government. He also sympathized with the students who lost their belongings.
Full Investigation Underway
Professor Elom urged the government to conduct a comprehensive investigation. He insisted that anyone found responsible - whether a contractor, engineer, or regulatory official - must be held accountable.
Affected students have been advised to report to the Student Union Government (SUG) and the Dean of Student Affairs for documentation and assistance.
As of the time of this report, emergency workers are still at the scene, and residents near by have been urged to stay alert.
