The Accident: What Happened?
In the early hours of Thursday, July 3, 2025, around 12:40 a.m., Diogo Jota and his 25-year-old brother, André Silva, were traveling in a Lamborghini Aventador on the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla, in the Zamora province of northwest Spain. The brothers were reportedly returning from a private event and were in the process of overtaking another vehicle when tragedy struck.
According to Spanish Civil Guard authorities, a tire blew out during the high-speed maneuver, causing Jota - who was believed to be driving - to lose control of the car. The vehicle veered off the road, rolled, and burst into flames, igniting a nearby patch of dry vegetation. Emergency responders rushed to the scene but could do nothing to save the brothers. Both were declared dead at the scene.

Diogo Jota, born in 1996 in Massarelos, Portugal, was a beloved footballer known for his sharp finishing, relentless energy, and humble character. He made his mark at clubs like Paços de Ferreira, FC Porto, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and ultimately Liverpool FC, where he scored over 60 goals in four years. Just two weeks before the accident, he celebrated his wedding to long-time partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children.
His younger brother, André Silva, though less known internationally, was also a dedicated footballer. He came through the youth systems of Porto and Famalicão and played in Portugal's lower divisions for clubs like Penafiel and Gondomar SC. Known for his skill on the wing and strong work ethic, André was admired by teammates and coaches alike.
Global Reactions and Tributes:
Tributes have poured in from around the world. Liverpool FC, in a tearful statement, expressed "unimaginable grief" over the loss of a "shining light, on and off the pitch." Teammates and legends like Steven Gerrard, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Jamie Carragher took to social media to honor Jota’s legacy.
A minute of silence was held in Jota’s honor at UEFA Women’s Euro matches, while thousands of fans gathered outside Anfield to leave flowers, scarves, and heartfelt notes.
